What silicone is safe for food?

The first patented pacifier in human history came out in 1845 and was made of rubber. In the early years, the pacifier was exposed to the problem that the baffle was not up to standard: due to the insufficient hardness of the material, the baby was easily inhaled into the mouth and suffocated during daily use. As soon as the news came out, many new parents had a shadow in their hearts. After all, products with substandard quality directly enter the baby's body through the mouth, and its impact and harm are difficult to estimate.
To this day, pacifiers are still with many babies in their infancy. The primary consideration for choosing a pacifier must be material safety. At present, food-grade silicone infant feeding sets have almost replaced rubber and are widely welcomed by the market. How to choose qualified food-grade silicone feeding tableware?

Low VOC

For end-consumers such as food or baby care, products with VOC levels well below the 0.5% specified by professional bodies for food applications can be purchased and used with confidence. For manufacturers of finished silicones, the additional processing step of post-vulcanization is required to produce commercial liquid silicone rubber with very low VOC content. However, secondary vulcanization consumes a lot of energy and emits a large amount of emissions, which also affects production efficiency. The VOC content is reduced by optimized process engineering, mainly the removal of low molecular weight volatile cyclic siloxanes from liquid silicone rubber. After the overall upgrade, the VOC content of the liquid silicone rubber product portfolio is reduced to a very low level, so silicone product manufacturers will be foolproof in complying with government regulations and industry standard testing and certification, minimizing mothers’ concerns about the safety of volatiles.

By eliminating the need for a post-curing process, component manufacturers can dramatically simplify production and increase efficiency, paving the way for fully automated lean production processes. If required, the entire production process can be carried out in a clean room. In addition, after eliminating the secondary vulcanization step, there is no need to worry about the formation of explosive air mixtures, thereby improving the safety of the production process.

Tear resistant

Silicone products have good stretchability and can be stretched by 70% or more of the original length. Pull hard with both hands and see if they return after relaxing. If you pull it up, it will turn white and smell pungent. If it tastes good, it means that it is ordinary silicone. On the contrary, it is food-grade silicone that will not whiten and stretch well when pulled. Sometimes it will not turn white when pulled up. Because the manufacturer has by-products in the production and vulcanization process, there will be a faint smell, but it is also food-grade silica gel, which will not affect the quality of the product, and this smell can be eliminated by itself.

In addition, it can be torn by hand. We all know that food-grade silicone tubes belong to the classification of silicone products. Silicone products have good tear resistance. It is advisable to take a silicone product and then find the weak place and tear it by hand to see if it will be torn. . You can also scrape it with your nails. After the silicone with bad material is scraped with your nails, it will be white.

Smell

Ordinary industrial silica gel usually adds excessive silicon powder, while food-grade silica gel is produced with odorless vulcanizing agent, which is safe, environmentally friendly, non-toxic and tasteless. Food grade silicone is platinum vulcanized, with high elasticity, high transparency and high tear strength. Regular silicone has a smell and is opaque. Food-grade silicone is in line with environmental protection requirements such as ROHS. KEAN silicone products have passed the product certification of the US FDA and EU LFGB food inspection. They have no pungent smell and can be in contact with food-related things.

Testing and certification such as FDA and LFGB

FDA is one of the executive agencies established by the U.S. government within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Department of Public Health (PHS). As a scientific regulatory agency, FDA's role is to ensure the safety of food, cosmetics, drugs, biological agents, medical devices, and radiological products that are domestically produced or imported into the United States. It was one of the first federal agencies to protect consumers as its primary function. Internationally, the FDA is recognized as one of the largest food and drug regulatory agencies in the world.
LFGB certification, also known as the "Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetics and Other Commodities Management Law" is an important basic legal document in German food hygiene management, and is the guideline and core of other special food hygiene laws and regulations.
Generally speaking, LFGB is stricter than FDA, and products certified by LFGB can be purchased with confidence.
